The Detroit region is rich with arts and culture and is a big reason why people love to live here.With over 30 art museums including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the sixth-largest fine arts mueum in the United States.
The region is also home to the largest collection off African-American art and artifacts in the world. This collection is housed at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
In addition, the region was the home of the first free standing Holocaust Memorial Center, which has vididly portrayed the Holocaust for more than 25 years.
With more than 40 theaters, the Detroit region is second only to New York City for theater seats east of the Mississippi river. Detroit is home to the beautifully restored Fox Theatre and Max M. The Black Holocaust Museum is an ongoing historical documentation of the experience of slavery. The Black Holocaust Museum chronicles 400 years of history into one moving and unforgettable experience. The exhibit houses dramatic photographs and artifacts, as well as a reproduction of a slave cabin.
The Holocaust Memorial Center, the first of its kind, documents the events leading up to, and the horror of, the Holocaust. It preserves a wealth of European Jewish culture and history.
Before catching a show at Meadow Brook Theater, visit the Oakland University Art Gallery. The exhibits reflect six exhibitions of African, Oceanic, Oriental and Native art. Contemporary art shows, lectures and public tours are held frequently throughout the year.

Music and theater are big in Greater Detroit as evidenced by the area’s large number of concert and live performance venues. Meadow Brook Theater, also located at Oakland University, shows classic comedies, musicals and drama productions. Because of the theater’s design, no one in the audience is more than 19 rows from the stage.
DTE Energy Music Theater is an outdoor summer music theater where top name musicians entertain. The music theater generally is the venue with the largest number of ticket sales in the nation. Freedom Hill Amphitheatre is an indoor and outdoor state of the art music and movie theater surrounded by Freedom Hill County Park. It is considered one of the largest entertainment arenas in the United States, with a seating capacity of 4,000 pavilion seats and 3,000 lawn seats. The Freedom Hill Amphitheatre has an elegant onsite banquet facility, VIP Hillside Club and a newly acquired Andiamo Italia Restaurant.
The Detroit Zoo was the first U.S. zoo with cageless exhibits. The zoo has over 1,200 animals from 400 different species. The zoo offers both indoor and outdoor animal environments.
Belle Isle Park is the country’s largest and oldest city island park. The 1,000-acre island park features a colorful water fountain display and a Conservatory. The Belle Isle Zoo operates during the spring and summer months.
