The Detroit region is home to more than 134,413 businesses. These companies employ more than 2.7 million people. Nearly 62 percent of these businesses are located within Oakland and Wayne counties.

For decades the Detroit Region has been known as a manufacturing region. Today, the Detroit region employs more than three times as many people in the services sector than the manufacturing sector. The services sector employs over 820,000 people in the Detroit Region - the manufacturing sector employs just under 244,000.


In 2011, after removing local government, the general medical and surgical hospitals industry is the largest industry in the Detroit region, with nearly 107,000 employees. Physicians offices employ an additional 46,000. The full-service restaurant and limited-service eating places industries collectively employ over 129,916, more than hospitals.
